PAST TENSES: REVIEW

We use past tenses when we talk about events that took place in the past. The past tenses are often used in narratives.
Read the text below. It tells you the story of how Robert College started.
Simple form of the verb is given in brackets, write the correct form in the blank. Fill in all the gaps, then press "Check" to check your answers.

1. Robert College (found) in Istanbul Turkey, by Cyrus Hamlin, an educator and Christopher Robert, a well-known philanthropist. Hamlin (be) an interesting man because he (be) also an inventor, technician, architect and builder. Robert (be) a wealthy merchant from new York.

This blue limestone (use) for all the college buildings constructed until the First World War.

4. Hamlin (need) the permission of the Sultan, and he also (know) that it would take a long time. Therefore, he   (rent) a building in Bebek, and Robert College (open) its doors in 1863. When Hamlin (buy) the land from Ahmet Vefik Pasa and the Sultan (give) his permission to start the college, Hamlin (start) to build Hamlin Hall in 1869. They (complete) Hamlin Hall in 1871. The second building constructed on the College property was the residence built by Professor Van Milligen in 1881. Kennedy Lodge (build) in 1891. The presidents of the College (live) in Kennedy Lodge until 1971. Today, the ground floor is used as dining room for teachers, the upper floors as a guesthouse.
 
5. The second academic building, Albert Long Hall (complete) in 1892. One of the five most famous organs of the world is housed in the auditorium of this building. Another building, Dodge Gymnasium, (be) the first modern gymnasium in Europe in those years and (have ) the only indoor running track in Turkey. The first basketball game (play) here in 1908.
